A model of memory

Wander, cache,
recall.

Three steps a chickadee's hippocampus takes to remember a hidden seed. The bubble above its head is the activity in that brain region.

This is a simplified model based on the public repository for the Fang et al. 2026 paper, "Barcode activity in a recurrent network model of the hippocampus enables efficient memory binding".

Step 1

Wander

As it moves through space, the brain draws a smooth wave of activity that marks where the bird is.

place code
Drag the bird along the track ↔ — the wave in its head moves with it
Step 2

Cache

Click a spot to bury a seed. As the bird digs, the smooth wave in its head snaps into a sparse barcode — a unique tag for that site.

barcode, stored
Click the track to bury a seed
Step 3

Recall

Return near a flag: the place cue alone makes the brain complete the whole stored barcode from memory.
